Day 25

From Peter Pan Must Die” by John Verdon”

Twenty two. I counted a few times and it’s always the same result. Twenty two.

Twenty two is the number of cardigans I have. I know Cardigan is a very broad term and not all are the same. There are different colors, different patterns (There is one with flowers and one tiger-striped), there are with crew necks, with v-necks, long, short, warm, light, made of cashmere, cotton, wool, silk – you name it – but still, this number caught me by surprise.

Let me just say in my defence:

Cardigans are versatile. When you are commuting an hour to the office every day – sunshine or snow – when you go from a warm car seat to a cold brisk street air, walk from the windy parking lot to the office building, into an office space controlled by some man who is never cold, go back out for lunch in a crowded air-stuffed restaurant, return to meeting in a large freezing conference room, leave office way after dark back to the street, when the wind can gust to 35 mph, into a cold car and drive back (an hour and a half now cause you never leave late enough to bit traffic). When you do all that in one day, you want something that can keep you comfortable and yet will come off easily and without too much fass. Cardigan is your best option.

On the other hand:

There is nothing more granny-like than Cardigan. In fact, that’s not true. It’s not your grandma that is reflected to you in the mirror, it’s actually your grandpa.

The cardigan was named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British ArmyMajor General who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War.[3] It is modelled after the knitted wool waistcoat that British officers supposedly wore during the war. The legend of the event and the fame that Lord Cardigan achieved after the war led to the rise of the garment’s popularity – supposedly, Brudenell invented the cardigan after noticing that the tails of his coat had accidentally been burnt off in a fireplace.[4][5]

It was Coco Chanel (yes, once again) that brought this very muscalane garment into the lady’s fashion

So, here I am, a few years later, with my twenty two Cardigans

What did I want to achieve?

Just survive another day in the office, I guess

And?

Well, ye. It worked. But now, home, with the temperature remote all to myself, I’m saying goodbye to a few. Keeping one of each – one long, one short, one cashmere, one wool, one cotton and yes, the tiger-striped one too – just in case I will need to show up to a meeting sometime in the future.

In – 10

Out – 12

Cool in Cardigan

Kurt Cobain in 1993 Concert (the cardigan was later sold at an auction for $334,000)
